Jack Cafferty and China

In an article written by By David Pierson, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer April 20, 2008, he reports on the protest by Chinese Americans over comments made by Jack Cafferty of CNN.
On the April 9 airing of "The Situation Room," Cafferty said of America's relationship with China: "We continue to import their junk with the lead paint on them and the poisoned pet food and export . . . jobs to places where you can pay workers a dollar a month to turn out the stuff that we're buying from Wal-Mart. So I think our relationship with China has certainly changed. I think they're basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they've been for the last 50 years."

In the article written by Mr. Pierson he quotes John He, an organizer of the event, "It's really unacceptable. It maliciously attacks all Chinese. This would not be accepted if it was directed at any other ethnic group." Obviously Mr. Cafferty was referring to the Chinese Government, the the oppressive rulers of China. Mr. He should be protesting the the failure of the Chinese Government to protect their workers from toxic death and not protesting free speech in America. The founding documents emphasize that we a Nation founded with free speech at the core. In the last 7 years all too few News and Commentary people have been willing to speak truth. It is refreshing to have a person like Mr. Cafferty still able to express his views.

Mr. He should understand that in the United States of America free speech is accepted and respected. Mr. Cafferty's job is that of a commentator, he is not reporting a news story, therefore his comments are opinions whether they are his or gathered from the people, they are opinions. Opinions are a wanted commodity in this age of homogeneous news programs. This Nation does not want to stifle speech. If an opinion is not the thoughts that you agree with you are free to present an opposing opinion in this Nation.

The substance of Mr. Cafferty's comments on this matter happen to be well spoken and the truth. China has and continues to export substandard and dangerous products to America and they do so with impunity from the US Government. China has been able to suck jobs from the United States with cheap labor, lack of worker protection and toxic pollution. Mr. He you should be concerned about the health and safety of the People of China.

This has become an every day event in America recently, the protesting of what is said and written by news people, comedians, and talk show hosts. This Country is based on FREE speech and the more we have of it the better this Nation will be.
